What do you see in the patient’s eyes: pain, fatigue, relief? What sort of a mood does her countenance project: contentment, apathy, irritability? How about the tone of the voice? Does this person struggle to speak? Does his or her greeting seem affected or forced? What about body language?—perhaps the parishioner doesn’t establish eye contact, or slumps in the chair, or is favoring a particular limb or surgical site.
